CBP to Offer ACE Advanced Reporting Webinar for Importers and Brokers

In a Cargo Systems Messaging Service (CSMS) notice published on October 15, 2010, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced a free webinar on reporting in the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE).

The webinar, intended for importers and brokers, will cover advanced ACE reporting topics such as modifying and scheduling reports, reporting on multiple variables, and creating graphic displays, among other topics.

It is recommended that participants have existing familiarity with the ACE Reporting Tool before attending this webinar.

The webinar will be held on October 21, 2010.

AA Alert on Risks of Transporting Lithium Batteries

The Federal Aviation Administration published a press release on October 8, 2010, with regard to the risks of transporting lithium batteries as cargo on aircraft.

The press release refers to the publication of a Security Alert for Operators (SAFO) which outlines "recent research which shows the lithium metal (non-rechargeable) and lithium-ion (rechargeable) batteries are highly flammable and capable of igniting during air transport under certain circumstances."

The press release also mentions that the suppression agent normally found in Class C cargo compartments, known as Halon 1301, is not effective in suppressing fires caused by lithium metal batteries.

USTR Update on TPP Talks

On its website, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has published two updates regarding recent negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) in Brunei.

The negotiations, which involved Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, and the United States, had covered topics such as (but not limited to) industrial goods, financial services, intellectual property, sanitary and phytosanitary standards, agriculture, technical barriers to trade, and textiles.

According to the updates, the negotiators focused on "preparation of consolidated text and proposals for cooperation."
